How do the EAS electronic anti-theft systems work?
Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) is a system of "labelling and alarming" in order to prevent shrinkage and it consists of three basic components: special labels called tags or sensors, detachers and deactivators, and the actual gates, also known as antennas that are positioned at the store exit.
The label is attached to an item and when a purchase is made, the label is either removed or disabled. If the label has not been removed or disabled, then the antennas placed at the store exit will sound an alarm when the product is removed from the store.
The detection mechanism varies depending on the type of EAS technology used: AM (Acusto-Magnetic), RF (Radiofrequency) or EM (Electro-Magnetic). Each technology has its own features and is suitable for protecting certain types of products. For example, RF technology should not be used for liquids and EM systems work with reactive labels, making them the perfect choice for libraries. The type of product to be secured will also dictate the type of EAS consumables used.
